1. Start with how you sleep
Your sleeping position decides how firm your mattress should be.
Side sleepers
Soft to medium
Doctors often recommend this position to avoid back pain. Choose a lower firmness so your hips and shoulders can sink in slightly. Tip: a pillow between the knees keeps hips and pelvis aligned.
Stomach sleepers
Medium-firm to firm
A firmer mattress stops your pressure points from sinking too far, which can cause discomfort.
Back sleepers
Medium
Medium firmness maintains even alignment of the body. Tip: a small pillow under the knees relieves lower-back tension.
Combination sleepers
Medium
If you change positions through the night, a medium firmness supports all of them.
2. Mattress types explained
- Coir
- A traditional, natural sleeping surface made from coconut husk fibre, densely packed and combined with natural latex (“rubberised coir”) or high-density foam. Firm, breathable and well suited to a warm climate.
- Bonnel spring
- The classic innerspring: hourglass-shaped steel coils wired together into one support unit, topped with felt and comfort foam. Durable and supportive at an accessible price.
- Pocketed spring
- Hundreds of individual springs, each in its own fabric pocket, that move independently — closer body support, no squeaks and minimal motion transfer between partners.
- Orthopaedic
- Built for spinal alignment with extra-strong rebonded foam cores, micro-pocketed springs or a hyper-elastic smart grid under a comfort top.
- Foam
- Layers of engineered foam — a soft, adaptive comfort layer (memory, latex or super-soft foam) over a high-resilience base — for body-hugging comfort without sinking to the bottom.

6. Frequently asked questions
Which mattress is best for back pain?
Most people with back discomfort do best on a medium-firm mattress that keeps the spine aligned — such as an orthopaedic (rebonded core) or pocketed-spring mattress. Back sleepers can also place a small pillow under the knees to relieve lower-back tension. If you have a medical condition, follow your doctor’s advice.
What mattress size do I need for a double bed in India?
Measure the inside of your cot frame. Common Indian sizes are 72" × 48" for a double, 72" × 60" or 75" × 60" for a queen, and 72" × 72" or 78" × 72" for a king. HiSleep also makes any custom size from 60–84" long and 24–84" wide.
How thick should my mattress be?
4–5 inch mattresses suit children, guest beds and firm-sleep preferences; 6 inch is the everyday standard; 8–10 inch mattresses add comfort layers and suit heavier sleepers or anyone who wants a plusher, hotel-like feel.
Coir or foam — which is better?
Coir is natural, breathable and firm, which suits hot climates like Kerala and people who like firm support. Foam contours to the body, isolates movement between partners and feels softer. Hybrid options combine coir or springs with foam layers.
Bonnel spring or pocketed spring?
Bonnel springs are wired together into one unit — durable, supportive and economical. Pocketed springs move independently in fabric pockets, so they follow your body more closely and don’t transfer movement to your partner.
How do I measure for a custom-size mattress?
Measure the inside length and width of the cot frame (where the mattress sits) in inches, rounding down to the nearest inch. Choose “Custom” in the size step while configuring — the price is calculated per square foot.
